Available photometry in the near-infrared, luminosity, and color changes are used to infer the temperature and radius changes of the long-period variables R Aql, SCrB, and U Ori. The predicted radius changes are inconsistent with the observed radial-velocity curves and reasonable hypotheses as to the center-of-mass velocity of the stars. It is suggested that the apparent increase in radius after visual light maximum is due to an increase in opacity (probably from molecules and grains) with decreasing temperature. This model is consistent with the suggestion by several authors that the normal state of long-period variables is minimum light and that the dissipation of a shock wave is the cause of the heating that is responsible for light maximum
