Detailed examination of the structure of folds at the edge of the Makran continental margin in the Gulf of Oman suggests that only the uppermost 2.5 km of sediment is initially folded. Deeper layers show little evidence of buckling. Compression rather than diapirism is probably the major driving force, but overpressured clays may play a significant role in determining the zone of décollement between folded and unfolded strata.
