Celestial Mechanics, Solar System: General, Stability
Scientific paper
Our planetary system is dynamically stable for the lifetime of the Sun according to long-term numerical integrations of the planetary orbits (2002, MNRAS, 336, 483). We first list up possible subsystems of a stable planetary system, and then discuss three forms of subsystems that may contribute to maintaining the stability of the system, and whose role may have escaped analysis by dynamical astronomers. We stress that multiplanet subsystems may have a variety of mechanisms for maintaining stability. This is in contrast with the stability problem of massless bodies, such as asteroids, satellites, and comets.
