Scientific paper
The uncorrected, original UBV light curves of the semidetached totally eclipsing binary system RY Geminorum (RY Gem), obtained by Hall et al. (1982, Acta Astron., 32, 411), were analyzed, using the Wilson-Devinney (W-D) method. From these analyses, an improved value for the mass-ratio, q, equal to 0.1925 and reliable geometrical elements were derived. They give the following, revised absolute elements of RY Gem: A/RMsun=25.04±0.55, mh/msun=2.04 ±0.11,mc/msun = 0.39 ±0.05, Rh/Rsun=±2.38 ±0.09, Rc/Rsun=6.19±0.20, log Lh/Lsun=l.53±0.22, and log Lc/Lsun=0.94±0.21. From the derived dereddened (B - V)0 colors, the primary and secondary components are found to belong to the spectral types of A2 V and K0-3 IV-V, respectively. From their dereddened (U-B)0 colors, it is noticed that both the components have UV excess of 0m.14. When compared to single main sequence stars of similar mass, both the components are found to be overluminous, bigger, and hotter for their masses. On the H-R diagram of the normal main sequence stars, the primary is found to lie on the main sequence but at a position of luminosity slightly higher for its mass. The secondary component is far above the main sequence and is overluminous by about 4m.5.
