Results of remote sensing investigations of the lunar surface on the basis of earth-based and spaceborne observational data are presented, with particular attention given to Apollo-17 data. Proceeding from the definition of remote-sensing investigations as a system of methods for measuring the spatial distribution of static fields, particle fluxes, and electromagnetic radiation, an analysis of these lunar surface characteristics is given. The magnetic field is studied by direct and indirect methods. The chemical composition of the surface rocks is determined by recording alpha, gamma, and X-rays. Data on lunar mineral composition are based on a study of the visual, UV, and IR albedo, using methods of colorimetry and spectroscopy.
