We generalize the well known characterizations of totally nonnegative and
oscillatory matrices, due to F.R.Gantmacher, M.G.Krein, A.Whitney, C.Loewner,
M.Gasca, and J.M.Pena to the case of an arbitrary complex semisimple Lie group.
