Data for a cooling protocloud's shape are combined with those for thermal instablity, the appearance of shocks, and fragmentation in order to investigate the structure of dense clouds. Steep cooling regimes are noted for both molecular and atomic gases. Implications of the present results for Lyman alpha clouds, globular filaments, and molecular gas are considered. The structure of an interstellar cirrus has been interpreted using broken power laws in order to estimate the cooling function.
