Surface photometry of the nebulosity surrounding the X-ray selected BL Lacertae object H0414 + 00 is presented. The radial profile is consistent with a giant elliptical galaxy of Mv = -23.2. Simultaneous optical to IR observations at three different epochs show wavelength-dependent variability. The spectral flux distribution is interpreted in terms of a galaxian contribution superposed onto a flat variable nonthermal component.
