An analysis of IRAS observations, especially at 12 microns, of stars in the Catalog of Nearby Stars by Gliese (1969) is presented and compared with the results for stars in the Bright Star Catalog presented by Waters et al. (1987). It is found that the relationships suggested by the above authors between (V - /12/) and (B - V) or (R - I) hold good also for Gliese stars which are mostly dwarfs. Based on these relationships, the percentages of stars with /12/ excess are estimated as a function of spectral type. In general, the percentage of stars with excess greater than 0.3m is less than 5 percent except for A stars and possibly M stars. For M stars, the excess is mostly for the late spectral subtypes M4 - M8. Making use of the trigonometric parallaxes given by Gliese, a table of absolute 12 magnitude is also given as a function of spectral sub-type for dwarfs A to M.
