The time development in the gravitational collapse of linearized perturbations in decelerating isothermal shocked layers without magnetic fields was determined numerically. The calculation considers all of the transverse flows, including the two sources of erosion, and solves for the unperturbed and perturbed density structures and gravitational forces inside the layer as a function of time. The solution consists of a quick decay of the initially positive perturbation, followed by a rapid growth of the negative perturbation that replaces it. The origin of this decay and of the delay in the growth time for the monotonic collapse solutions is an erosion of the column density peak when it emerges form the front of the layer.
