Scientific paper

The paper reports observations of the transient X-ray source A 0620-00 which were obtained with the rotation modulation collimator on Ariel V over 40 days between August and October 1975. The position is determined as right ascension 6 hr 20 min 16.56 sec and declination -0 deg 20 min 24 sec within an error box measuring 1.6 by 2.1 arcmin. A light curve and a composite spectrum in the range from 3.0 to 7.6 keV are presented. No evidence is found for periodic modulation of the source or for shot-noise variability. It is noted that flaring associated with spectral hardening was observed shortly after maximum light and that the source intensity decayed by a factor of three during the observational period. The source is identified with the recurrent optical nova 1975 Nova Monocerotis.
