If a continuous transition should exist from objects called Seyfert galaxies to objects termed quasi-stellar objects (QSOs), and objects of both groups were of comparable luminosity, a valid claim could be made that the QSOs are simply distant Seyfert galaxies. The existence of such a smooth transition is demonstrated, using new observations of H-beta or L-alpha fluxes for 57 Seyfert galaxies and QSOs, obtained with an intense image-dissector scanner, and by comparing the deduced H-beta luminosities of QSOs and class 1 Seyfert galaxies.
