The X-ray source 3U 1207 + 39, associated with the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151, was observed for two days in November 1974 and again for six days in January 1976 by the proportional counter spectrometer on the satellite Ariel-5. The observed intensity was significantly different from that reported from Uhuru data. A model relating the X-ray absorption and optical absorption lines is developed which suggests that the X-ray and optical sources are coincident and that the absorption takes place in a shell about 5 billion km thick and about 4 billion km in diameter.
