Several alternative explanations are discussed for the weakness of Lyman continuum emission in the spectrum of the high-redshift quasar OQ 172. These include a very high temperature for the emitting gas, a dominant heating mechanism other than photoionization, collisional excitation of the Ly-alpha emission, and clouds or filaments that are optically thick in the Lyman continuum. The optical depths required for the last alternative are estimated, and it is argued that none of the reasonably plausible explanations is compatible with a simple optically thin photoionization model. The last alternative is favored because it allows optically thick photoionization models.
