The developers of the transmission grating elements of AXAF's Low Energy Transmission Grating (LETG) have given special attention to their optical quality, which must match the high angular resolution of the AXAF telescope. The variations of the period over the grating area and among different elements are less than 0.025 percent rms; the bar-width is half of the grating period, within 50-nm tolerances, for the suppression of the even-order intensities.
