The cooled grating spectrometer CGS4 is a comprehensive spectroscopic facility instrument for 1 to 5 micrometer observing at the United Kingdom Infrared Telescop (UKIRT). Key CGS4 characteristics and performance are briefly reviewed. An overview of the contribution of CGS4 observations to our understanding of everything from solar system objects to very high redshift galaxies is presented.
