Study of cyclically-laminated sediments of tidal origin (tidal rhythmites), recently recognized in ancient sedimentary rocks and modern deposits, has demonstrated that sedimentary strata can accurately record information on Earth's past rotation. The quantitative analysis of tidal rhythmites offers a more reliable method of inquiry into the history of Earth's rotation and the Moon's orbit than the analysis of growth increments in invertebrate fossils, and extends such investigations into the Precambrian (>540 million years ago).
