The problem of calculation of the radiation field in a multilayer atmosphere consisting of an arbitrary number n of homogeneous sublayers with given optical properties is considered. It is assumed that every sublayer can contain internal sources of radiation with a power characterized by a given function gj(τ,ω) (j = 1, 2, ..., n) where τ is the optical depth in the layer and ω defines the direction of radiation. The formulated general problem is shown to fall apart into a number of more particular ones. At first, it is necessary to solve the problem with a parallel external flux for each separate sublayer. Methods for solving this problem are well elaborated. Next, the same problem for the whole multilayer medium is considered and the algorithm for its solution is given. After that it is necessary to solve the general problem with internal sources for each sublayer. When g(τ,ω) permits a polynomial representation in τ, the solution is obtained on the basis of the so-called Q-representation of the radiative transfer equation. The cases of conservative and nonconservative scattering are discussed separately. The algorithm representing the solution of the general problem for a multilayer atmosphere through the solution of particular problems is presented. Strict relations are obtained also to check the accuracy at every stage of computations.
