Short Period Comets
Scientific paper
A short-period comet has rightly a one in 300 chance per perihelion passage of splitting in two. It also has a typical inner solar system lifetime of 500 perihelion passages. Thus, most members of this comet group break in two at least once in their life. The fact that a typical short-period comet has been seen on average only four times explains why the only two known cases are P/Biela, and the parent of P/Neujmin 3 and P/Van Biesbroeck.
