V536 Aql is a classical T Tauri star hat has been known for a long time to exhibit a large optical linear polarization (6%-8%), a fact that suggested the presence of extended and asymmetrically distributed material around the star. In this paper we present infrared JHK images of V536 Aql, obtained with SHARP infrared camera attached to the European Southern Observatory (ESO)-NTT telescope. These high-angular resolution observations allow, for the first time, to resolve V536 Aql as a binary system with a projected separation of 0.52 sec at a position angle approximately 17 deg and to give evidence for extended nebulosity associated with the star. A rough estimation of the physical parameters of the components of the binary is presented, together with a discussion of possible geometries for the circumstellar environment.
