The band-limited noise components in the power spectra of accreting high-and low magnetic field neutron stars (pulsars, and Z and atoll sources) and black hole candidates are compared. It is suggested that these noise components fall into two groups. One group occurs in systems with an appreciable magnetosphere (pulsars and Z sources) and has a cut-off frequency that is related to neutron star spin rate. The other group occurs in systems with an inner, radiation pressure dominated disk (black-hole candidates, and Z and atoll sources) and has a cut-off frequency that is correlated to accretion rate. Z sources, with both a magnetosphere and an inner disk, show both types of noise. Implications of this grouping are briefly discussed. One implication is that neutron stars in Z sources are predicted to have 10-20 ms spin periods, in accordance with theoretical expectations.
