The γ method [1] uses thicknesses measured on facies in a set of cyclical sedimentary deposits to determine the facies' effective accumulation rates and time intervals of accumulation. To accomplish this, the assumption is made that every cycle was accumulated over exactly the same interval of time. The γ method has not been tested on a stratigraphic section where the correct answers were known a priori. In particular, the reliability of the γ method has not been determined when the assumption does not strictly hold. The test constructed here begins with a synthetic time-stratigraphic section of cyclical deposits and specified effective depositional rates for each facies, generates a thickness section from these parameters, and applies the γ method to the thickness section. The γ method should recover the original time section and accumulation rates, but it does not, even when the coefficient of variation of the accumulation intervals is only 15%.
