Cosmology: Theory, Shock Waves
Scientific paper
In order to describe the propagation and interaction of shock waves in cosmology we analyze the curvature properties of a two-parameter class of generalized solitonic solutions on a Bianchi I background. We find that the physically meaningful cases correspond to a restricted range of values of the parameter h which describes the degeneracy of the poles. The discussion includes the particular extra case h = 1, corresponding to the standard one-soliton solution with a nondegenerate first-order pole. For all these cases it is possible to perform a matching that covers the whole spacetime with suitable coordinate charts. The solutions in such new coordinates describe gravitational shock waves propagating on the Bianchi I background, with a null fluid surface stress which is conserved across the discontinuity surfaces. These solutions may be considered as examples of the dissipation of an inhomogeneous initial cosmological singularity as shock waves propagating on a homogeneous background.
