The behavior of zonal winds in the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere at the CNR meteor radar station near Bologna is examined for the periods 8-26 January and 4-26 February 1990 during the DYANA campaign. The prevailing flow at different levels reversed eastwards, coincident with the temperature peak at 10 hPa during the very pronounced minor warming observed in mid-February, 1990. The great day-to-day variability of winds in February appears closely connected to the activity of long-period waves at that time. The lack of coherence in the semidiurnal and diurnal tides (ST and DT, respectively), which split into subsidiary peaks around the 12-h and 24-h peaks, is tentatively attributed to nonlinear coupling between these tides and planetary waves with periods of 8-13 days. The significant amplitudes of the DT at various heights are atypical compared with the previous winter values at Bologna, as are those of the strong 8-h oscillation observed in January 1990. Surprisingly, the terdiurnal tide appears to be the most coherent in frequency compared to the other tides.
