The morphology and kinematics of the emission-line lobes around the high-redshift radio galaxy 3C 368 (z - 1.13) are examined in detail. The results confirm the close connection between the radio and emission-line lobes reported previously. The present line-free continuum images taken between 700 and 900 nm show that any correlation between the continuum light distribution and the radio source is loose, if present at all. The spatial and kinematic structure of the southern emission-line lobe is well described by an expanding conical shell of gas around the radio-emitting plasma. A quantitative model in which the emission lines originate from cooling material having passed the bow shock accounts well for the observed line intensity, the apparent lag behind of the emission-line region with respect to the radio source, and the velocities found in the gas. No indications for the presence of a nuclear source of photoionization are found.
