Since the time of their discovery in 1967, the study of isolated neutron istars has been entirely based upon observations of pulsars in the radio band, with only a few notable exceptions. In recent years the number of isolated neutron stars detected also in the optical, X-ray, and gamma-ray domain has been constantly increasing, providing the powerful tools of multiwavelength astronomy for this class of objects also. Here we review the observed characteristics of these isolated neutron stars, concentrating on the recent results and on the areas of expected future developments.
