A new method is proposed for determining the parameters beta, Z, alpha that describe the formation rate, metallicity, and initial mass function of the stars in a galaxy. The method, based on photometric indices characterizing the integrated energy distibution, is applied to the gE galaxy NGC 4649 and to the central regions of the Sc systems NGC 628, 1637, 4321, 5194.
