The use of amateur stellar-occultation observations of asteroids to detect possible satellites is discussed. The principle of occultation observations is explained and illustrated with drawings, maps, and sample light curves. Secondary phenomena, short extinctions of the star not attributable to the asteroid itself, can give evidence of asteroid satellites if observed and confirmed by several astronomers, and several secondary phenomena have been reported in recent years. The need for organized observational campaigns, at least to identify objects for study with more elaborate techniques such as speckle interferometry, is stressed.
