The need for greater upper-stage capability for the Space Transportation System (STS) has resulted in the go-ahead being given by the U.S. Congress and the President for development of a Shuttle-compatible Centaur. The Centaur has been in use in America's space program since the mid-1960's, in conjunction with the Atlas and Titan launch vehicles. It is a high energy liquid oxygen/liquid hydrogen vehicle built by General Dynamics Convair, with a Pratt and Whitney two-engine propulsion system. Two general mission classes that were defined for the STS Centaur have caused General Dynamics to design two vehicle versions. This paper first describes the design of the two versions, their capabilities and their potential missions. The ground processing of the Centaur is then described by discussing each Eastern Launch Site (ELS) facility involved, in sequential order of the processing flow. Changes to ELS facilities required to accommodate Centaur are emphasized. Contingency plans and airborne support equipment recycle operations are also examined. The paper concludes with a summary and a discussion of the significance of a Centaur-augmented STS.
