The ion composition of the upper ionosphere (400-1000 km) at latitudes of 51-61 deg N in quiet geomagnetic conditions is characterized by (1) the daytime predominance of atomic oxygen ions, and (2) the daytime as well as nighttime presence of considerable (about 10 percent) relative concentrations of N(+) ions. A comparison of measured vertical profiles of relative ion concentrations with values predicted by the IRI-78 model shows that the model agrees poorly with experiment (especially at heights above 750-800 km), which may be connected with the presence of considerable latitudinal gradients of ion composition in the upper ionosphere.
