Equations (A2) and (A4) in the Appendix are incorrect. In each equation there should be no square root in the denominator. The correct equations are thusχ2ν=1/(N-1)-M-1Σi=1N-1([(yi-yi+1)-(fi-fi+1)]2)/(σ2i+σ2i+1), (A2)andχ2ν=1/(N-1)-M-1Σi=1N-11/N-iΣj=i+1N([(yi-yj)-(fi-fj)]2)/(σ2i+σ2j), (A4)respectively. The correct equations were used in the analysis and so the results in the paper remain unchanged.
In addition, the derivation of equation (A4) requires some clarification. Mathematically, the yi and fi in equation (A1) are replaced with Δyij≡yi-yj and Δfij≡fi-fj, such thatχ2ij=((Δyij-Δfij)2)/(σ2yi+σ2yj).
To derive a single value of χ2 at each point i, defineχ2i=<χ2ij>=1/N-iΣj=i+1Nχ2ij. For the full profile,χ2ν=1/(N-1)-M-1Σi=1N-1χ2i, which is equivalent to equation (A4).
