This is a summary of some of the topics discussed at the Bologna meeting on the origin and evolution of cosmic magnetism. There remain major problems in understanding the origin of magnetic fields in the cosmos, but there are encouraging signs that many of these can be addressed by advances in theory, in computation and with new observational approaches to the study of cosmic magnetic fields. In particular, there are prospects of being able to make major observational advances with the Square Kilometre Array. These in turn will stimulate the development of astrophysical theory and computation.
