The statistics of main-sequence binary systems in the Galaxy and especially in the nearby region are reviewed. The multiplicity percentages reported in various surveys are listed in a table, and an overall value of 60-65 percent is proposed. Mass-ratio statistics are examined in the light of binary-formation theory, and the need for more observations and more careful analysis is indicated. The nearby-binary and solar-type-star study of Abt and Levy (1976) and some criticisms of it are considered in detail, and the problems of CPM pairs and unseen companions are explored.
