A search for arcmin-scale radio emission in BL Lac objects at a dynamic range of about 1000:1/40-arcsec beam has been conducted, using the most compact configuration of the VLA at 20 cm. Radio sources showing emission on scales greater than 1 arcmin are associated either with galaxies misclassified as BL Lac objects or with objects showing relatively weak BL Lac properties. It is noted that the more extreme the variability of the BL Lac core, the less likely an object is to exhibit large scale radio emission. These results are consistent with a scheme in which there is a continuum of alignment angles with respect to the line-of-sight in BL Lac objects; as the angle between the radio axis and the line-of-sight increases, the core varies less and the amount of extended radio emission increases.
