It is pointed out that the spatial distribution of interplanetary dust grains is closely connected to the origin of the grains and to their dynamical behavior in interplanetary space. A reasonable distribution function for grain orbits would provide a basis for obtaining the spatial distribution of grains with the aid of the integral considered by Haug (1958). One of the attempts to estimate the orbital distribution of grains involves the solution of a Fokker-Planck equation in phase space. Briggs (1962) proceeded to calculate the spatial distribution of grains, taking into account an analytical solution of the equation for the secular changes in orbital elements of a grain exclusively due to the Poynting-Robertson effect. The present investigation is concerned with the generalization of Brigg's method with the aim to obtain a realistic distribution function of grain orbits. The obtained results are compared with the spatial distribution derived by Leinert et al. (1981) based on the zodiacal light experiments from the Helios probes.
