The thermal Thomas-Fermi approach (TTF) is used to describe the thermodynamic properties of hot dense matter (HDM) in the core of collapsing massive stars. A detailed comparison with thermal Hartree-Fock calculations shows good agreement between the two approaches. The properties of HDM are also investigated by using several effective Skyrme type forces of different parameterization, and a comparison of the results obtained with these forces is presented. It is found that the entropy is very sensitive to the effective mass of the chosen nucleon-nucleon interaction.
