The 1667 MHz transition of OH was studied with high velocity resolution (0.3 km/s) in comets C/Meier (1978 XXI), C/Bradfield (1979X), and C/Austin (1982g). Asymmetries were generally observed both in the velocity profile and in the East-West brightness distribution. The spectra with minimum asymmetry were analysed with a vectorial model using a Monte Carlo approach. Satisfactory fits are obtained with (1) monokinetic, (2) Gaussian, (3) Maxwellian velocity distributions of the OH parent molecule. The radial outflow model (Haser) with a monokinetic parent molecule is excluded by the data. The asymmetries were interpreted qualitatively in terms of anisotropic outgassing of the nucleus. There is no indication of an anomalous outflow velocity of the parent molecule when the percentage of anisotropic outgassing is large. A rough orientation of the outgassing is given.
