New near-infrared observations of the nucleus of NGC 5128 are presented. The observations indicate that the nuclear emission is variable at 3.6 microns, where it dominates over the stellar component when small diaphragms are used. The 3.6-micron flux increased by a factor of nearly 5 from 1971 to 1981, which is similar to the variations of the radio and X-ray fluxes. A new discussion of the overall spectrum of the compact source is presented which takes into account variability, corrections for absorption, and contamination from extended sources. A simple spectrum is obtained, with spectral index alpha = -0.3 up to 3 THz, and alpha = 1.0 from 3 THz to gamma-ray energies. The luminosity of the compact source is 3.4 x 10 to the 42nd erg/s in the radio band and the total luminosity up to 300 GeV is 1.4 x 10 to the 44th erg/s. The detection of infrared emission associated with the radio and X-ray knot B of the jet observed by Schreier et al. (1981) indicates that the spectra of the knots also present a break.
