We have investigated the long-term optical light curve of SMC X-3 using the MACHO database. The optical counterpart is an O9e star that shows low-amplitude variability with a period of 44.86 days in both visible and red light. This compares favorably with the X-ray outburst recurrence period of 45.1 days recently found by Corbet et al. It is likely that this ~45 day cycle is the orbital period of the hot star and its 7.8 s pulsar companion.
This paper utilizes public-domain data obtained by the MACHO Project, jointly funded by the US Department of Energy through the University of California, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, under contract W-7405-ENG-48, by the National Science Foundation through the Center for Particle Astrophysics of the University of California under cooperative agreement AST 88-09616, and by the Mount Stromlo and Siding Spring Observatories, part of the Australian National University.
