We have set about tracing the destruction of Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission near powerful AGNs. Our results show two galaxies with contrasting outcomes. PAHs appear to be nearly ubiquitous in the ISM of massive disk galaxies, generally brightest in regions of active star formation where these molecules are heated by ultraviolet radiation associated with the photo-dissociation regions in molecular clouds. Is the observed relative absence of PAHs near Seyfert nuclei due to their destruction in the intense radiation field and/or from shocks? We present a study of two nearby Seyfert galaxies using mid- and far-infrared images acquired with the IRAC and MIPS instruments aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The Spitzer data trace the location and intensity of 8 micron PAH emission, as well as warm dust emission from large dust grains emitting at 24 and 70 microns. In NGC 1068, a classic Sy 2 galaxy, there is extensive 8 micron PAH emission coinciding with the starburst ring approximately 1 kpc from the nucleus, in the face of the modeled AGN induced UV ionization field. In contrast to this possible PAH excitation seen in NGC 1068, NGC 6926 shows weak central PAH emission compared to the 24 micron, 70 micron, and radio continuum emission. This morphology suggests PAH destruction by the AGN within the central 1.5 kpc. We also investigate dust temperature variations through the disks in these galaxies which exhibit a mix of AGN and starburst activity.
