We discuss the important role that cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations play in understanding the nature of dark energy. We focus our attention on both large scale CMB observations, in light of the recently released 3 years of WMAP data, and the prospects for upcoming small scale (arc minute) CMB observations, sensitive to the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, to characterize dark energy's effect on the cluster mass distribution.
