I will review the current state of X-ray imaging and spectroscopic studies of roughly edge-on disk galaxies with Chandra and XMM-Newton. Here the aim has been to characterize the physical properties and origin of hot X-ray emitting gas in the halos of these galaxies. Soft diffuse X-ray emission from hot gas at temperatures between 2 and 10 million degrees is detected in a wide range of disk galaxy types, including active starburst galaxies with high core collapse SN rates, Milky-Way-like normal spiral galaxies and even low star formation rate massive spirals. I will discuss observational diagnostics of SN II and SN1a-driven fountains and winds and IGM-accretion-fed virialized halos, along with the uncertainties and limitations of current X-ray observational studies. Comparisons will also be made with diffuse X-ray emission observed in dwarf galaxies, early-type galaxies and ultra-luminous merging galaxies.
