LIGO is currently operating at its design sensitivity and is capable of detecting gravitational waves produced during the merger of compact binaries at distances of the Virgo cluster and beyond. The next few years will see further improvements in the sensitivity of the international network of gravitational wave detectors. Observations from this network will be used first to provide constraints on populations of binary neutron stars and black holes, and eventually detections will provide a wealth of astrophysical information about these systems. I will describe the current status of LIGO's search for gravitational waves and I will emphasize how these observations provide a new astronomical window on the universe. I will also describe the future of gravitational wave astronomy.
