In a recent paper Wiechen et al. (1988) have presented a new concept for the relaxation of collisionless self-gravitating matter. This paper is concerned with the problem of how to calculate final states of violent relaxation quantitatively, incorporating the energy distance of an initial distribution from its lowest energy state that is accessible under conservation of phase space density. The loss of information due to the relaxation is controlled by that energy distance. The dynamical evolution of an initial distribution is treated numerically for an example with spherical symmetry. The results are in good agreement with the predictions of the relaxation model.
