The Tully-Fisher (T-F) relation is calibrated using nearby galaxies with distances determined from the Cepheid period-luminosity relation. From this calibration and a motion of the Local Group towards Virgo of 270±150 km s-1 it is found that H = 68±17 km s-1Mpc-1 and H = 82±18 km s-1Mpc-1 from the blue and infrared T-F relations, respectively. The large uncertainties of these two determinations of the Hubble parameter are primarily due to the intrinsic dispersion in the T-F relation and to the small number of calibrating galaxies that are presently available. It is pointed out that a systematic error in the distance scale derived from the T-F relation in blue light arises from the fact that many galaxies in the core of the Virgo cluster are hydrogen-poor anaemic objects that are probably also dust-poor.
