A description is given of the binary system with the pulsar PSR 1913 + 16, for which the change in orbital period has been interpreted as due to energy loss caused by gravitational-wave emission. Particular attention is given to the physics of close binaries, reasons for change of orbital period, and problems in the evolution of binary stars, especially the origin of neutron stars and pulsars. Also considerd are observational problems, models of systems with a pulsar, and the analysis of radio-astronomy data. The observation of quadrupole gravitational radiation from PSR 1913 + 16 is discussed.
