The 'Cowling approximation', where the Eulerian perturbation of the gravitational potential is neglected, is used to obtain the frequencies of adiabatic solar oscillations as eigenvalues of a real symmetric matrix. The computed p-mode spectra of low and high degree are compared with observational results. It is suggested that the influence of the Coulomb interactions on the equation of state, which is presently neglected, will probably improve the degree of agreement obtained.
