The external observations and the associated reduction procedures applied to transform the final Hipparcos catalog in a self consistent reference frame are presented. The Earth's equatorial plane position in the year 2000 is extrapolated from present and past positions and applying Hipparcos reduction algorithms. Optical and radio methods are used in the linking techniques. The astrometry techniques and the synthesis of the results are included.
