A general expression for the intensity (Phi) of sources of wave motions during the adaptation of meteorological fields to a state of quasi-geostrophic equilibrium was derived previously (Gavrilov, 1982, 1983). The present paper proposes a simple method for estimating values of Phi which are averaged over the entire depth of the atmosphere on the basis of measurements of surface pressure, temperature, and wind. As an example, attention is given to the use of averaged-intensity maps to interpret internal-gravity-wave observations in the lower thermosphere from measurements of intensity variations of the 5577-A oxygen line.
