It is demonstrated that the total entropy of de Sitter spacetime vanishes identically, the positive entropy located beyond the event horizon being exactly cancelled by the negative 'vacuum' entropy contained within the event horizon. It is also demonstrated from a thermodynamical point of view that cosmological models involving a phase of superexponential inflation are on exactly the same footing as the equivalent models which involve a phase of subexponential inflation. For the idealized, eternally quasi-de Sitter models, the decrease in horizon entropy that occurs when the event horizon shrinks is compensated by an increase in the vacuum entropy.
